UPTIME represented by Pierluigi Petrali, Manager of Manufacturing R&D of Whirlpool Corporation, at the panel discussion “Nouvelles maintenances” (The New Maintenance) at Global Industrie Fair on 6 March 2019 in Lyon, France.
Pierluigi Petrali explained main reasons why research on predictive maintenance is important for Whirlpool, especially when dealing with complex automatic processes in the Whirlpool’s production line of white goods.
He also provided an example on the connection between preventive and predictive maintenance strategies. Preventive maintenance is mainly performed according to the experiences or indications, e.g. by substituting machine components regularly or as scheduled to have a zero breakdown. However, predictive maintenance would be a way to reduce the cost, as foreseen in the preventive action, because it can predict when the component will need to be substituted before breakdown happens.
